As a Central/Executive member one of the first things you may hear is I was never aware of such a committee and what is it that you do? Here is a brief description, but not limited to what we do, our functions, and our duties.
A central committee person is the elected representative of the people at the most local level. As an elected official, the committee person represents the people in the precinct and serves as a communication link between the Party, elected officials and citizens of the precinct.
Central committees consist of one member from each election precinct in the county, or of one member from each ward in each city and from each township in the county, as the outgoing committee determines; and Such district, city, township, or other committees as the rules of the party provide.
The role of the central committee person is to encourage community involvement and political involvement at a grassroots level by providing information and an opportunity for participation in the political process.
As a central committee person, you are the first line of contact with residents of
your precincts (including people who are not registered to vote and independents) when they are concerned with local issues that may affect their community.
EDUCATING ESTABLISHED VOTERS
This part is very important to having a presence in your precinct. You can be of
service to your community in the area of voter education in a number of ways.
As an elected official at the grassroots level, the central committee person is a
valuable contact between a constituency and office holders. Attend public meetings where neighborhood issues first surface. Talk to the residents of your precinct. If there is a "hot issue" brewing in your neighborhood, alert the proper elected officials.
FILLING VACANCIES IN ELECTIVE OFFICE
Various provisions of the United States Constitution, Ohio Constitution, Ohio Revised Code, and home rule charters set forth procedures for filling a vacancy in a particular Office by appointment, either for the remainder of the term or until an election is held to select someone to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term. A county party central committee is charged with filling a vacancy in some county and city elective offices.
As a committee we are responsible to appoint two people to the Board of Elections.
